Driving your engineering from concept to production

KNUD E. HANSEN are experts in using engineering simulation tools in marine engineering and naval architecture, allowing us to transform engineering concepts into reality with confidence.  We provide a comprehensive range of engineering simulation and analysis services including advanced Finite Element Method (FEM) structure analysis, multi-body dynamic analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis for any type of ship or offshore structure.

Structural

Using the most advanced Finite Element Method (FEM) tools KNUD E. HANSEN can solve any structural design issues using global and local structural analysis, linear and non-linear problems applicable to steady-state and time dependent problems. Even irregular-shaped objects composed of a number of different materials and having complex boundary conditions can be assessed.

Classification Societies often demand FEM calculations to support the approval process for complex and novel designs.  We also use FEM in the design process to help pinpoint problems areas, improving and optimizing the design before dependencies on other components prohibit changes.  The result is better structural solutions and shortening the product development time thereby reducing costs.  The areas that are typically studied include:

  • Global strength
  • Local structure & buckling
  • Fatigue
  • Slamming, collision & grounding
  • Noise & vibration
  • Thermal transmission
Dynamic

KNUD E. HANSEN has extensive experience in the simulation of the free-body dynamics for devising, verifying and optimising solutions for a particular operation or the performance of a mechanical design.  We can provide analyses of the dynamic behaviour of any ship or offshore structure subjected to wave motion and other forces.  Using our advanced software tools and expert knowledge we can simulate and assess:

  • motion in all six degrees of freedom
  • accelerations for structural assessment and sea-fastening design
  • motions and accelerations for the evaluation of vessel operability
  • hydrodynamic pressures and sea loads for structural analysis
  • multi-body dynamics including interaction effects

Structures and components can be modelled and tested to simulate how loads and forces are distributed through structures and mechanical systems such as mooring or lifting equipment.  The accurate analysis simultaneously solves equations for kinematic, static, quasi-static and dynamic systems which can model and assess:

  • Static & dynamic structure analysis
  • Buckling, Flexible bodies & Natural vibration
  • Structure response to external loading factors
  • High velocity & impact modelling
  • Damage, failure or life of components in a system model
  • Welded, fastened assemblies & jointed connections
  • 3D contact simulation for complex assembly interactions
  • Complex mechanical assemblies with multiple moving parts
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

CFD is a powerful engineering tool for simulating all types of fluid behaviour. It provides detailed descriptions of fluid flow characteristics including values for velocities, pressures, temperatures and other variables.

The accuracy of CFD has improved tremendously in recent years.  CFD significantly reduces design and development time, provides more detailed information than physical experiments, and quickly simulates a wide range of flow conditions. Different fluids can be modelled at the same time (i.e. water and air), taking into account viscosity and turbulence (real flow conditions). Time domain calculations (dynamic pressure loads, seakeeping analysis, slamming loads, etc.) can also be performed.  We apply CFD to many areas of analysis including:

  • Calm water resistance
  • Hull form optimisation
  • Aerodynamic calculations
