Any type of equation or data set describing the magnitude and direction of the environmental forces affecting a vessel’s position can be applied to the dynamic model. Dynamic positioning may either be calculated as an absolute position (i.e. locked to a fixed point above the bottom), or relative to a moving object such as another ship or an underwater vehicle. 

The position of a ship can also be determined so as to be at a favourable angle towards wind, waves and current.
