Reduced weight = reduced displacement = less propulsion resistance = lower energy consumption 

The impact of saving weight is most dramatic for passenger ships and ferries, where a 10% reduction in lightweight can reduce fuel consumption by up to 5%*. 

Weight can be saved through application of various techniques, including: 

  • Structural optimisation analysis
  • Introduction of high performance, low weight materials such as carbon composites and aluminium
  • Minimisation of corrosion susceptibility
  • Optimisation of piping layouts and routing, together with the use of GRP in ballast water systems
  • Weight optimisation of electrical systems and equipment
