KNUD E. HANSEN, the Danish design consultancy specializing in the cruise and ferry market, established a US subsidiary in Fort Lauderdale.

The office is intended to serve US and Canadian clients in a more timely and efficient manner ‘as they prepare for emerging market opportunities and regulatory changes in the coming years,’ according to Douglas Frongillo, a naval architect and marine engineer who serves as gm.

KNUD E. HANSEN is currently working on a design for a 60mtr, 65-passenger catamaran for Caribbean operations to be built in Turkey for an undisclosed owner. It also has a five-star expedition ship design for a major European yard that has not yet materialized into a contract.

Other projects include energy optimization studies for Carnival Cruise Lines with the aim of improving efficiency and reducing fuel consumption and upgrades to meet statutory stability requirements for Canadian ferry clients. The Florida office also will be involved in refitting studies and survey work around the Caribbean.

Frongillo said the US branch will likely have a six-person staff.

Established in 1937, KNUD E. HANSEN’s headquarters in Elsinore, north of Copenhagen, employs about 45 people and has been involved in numerous design projects over the years for owners ranging from Carnival to Crystal to Hurtigruten. The firm has subsidiaries in the UK and Australia, with representations inGermany, France, Greece and the Faroe Islands.
