MEET THE NAVAL ARCHITECTS: Christian Bursche, Naval Architect at Knud E. Hansen

Which project are you working on right now?

– I am working on the development of a RoLoPax vessel. As the name suggests this is a combined RoRo, LoLo and passenger vessel which will be equipped with a stern ramp to the main deck, hatches on the weather deck, two cranes, a garage in lower hold with a fixed ramp and accommodation facilities for 100 passengers.

What is the most challenging issue facing in the industry right now?

– One of the most challenging issues is EEDI for RoRo vessels. The operation of RoRo vessels varies very much from route to route, so it is difficult to apply a one-size-fits-all approach, as has been done with EEDI for cargo ships where the operation and the tonnage, in principle, is more uniform. EEDI requirements for RoRo vessels, in its current form, is making it extremely challenging to design such a vessel and, in any case, the designs are developed with such small margins that it may carry some risk for the owners and the yards a newly constructed vessel cannot meet the EEDI.

Can you highlight a project that you have been very proud to participate in?

– We designed the two RoRo vessels for CMN which, among other things, is used by the French army for carrying heavy equipment. Physical constraints related to port infrastruture combined with very specific requirements from the end user, made this project particularly exciting. We drew up some alternative concepts in close cooperation with CMN during the course of a year and it resulted in a contract for two ships with Hyundai Mipo. During a recent visit onboard the ‘MN Calao’ everyone, from the end user over the shipowner to the crew expressed great satisfaction with the ships’ design, which incidentally differs minimally from the original concept. When asked what could be done differently if we were to start again, the answer was unanimous from all sides, nothing. It was a good pat on the back.

Hvilket projekt arbejder du på netop nu? 

– Jeg arbejder på udviklingen af et ro/lo-pax fartøj. Som navnet antyder er der tale om et kombineret ro/ro, lo/lo og passagerskib, der bliver udstyret med agterrampe til hoveddækket, dæksluger på vejrdækket, to kraner, garage på tanktoppen med fast rampe samt faciliteter for, indtil videre, 100 passagerer.

Hvilken faglig problemstilling betragter du som værende den mest interessante i branchen netop nu? 

– En af de mere udfordrene problemstillinger er EEDI for RoRo skibe.
Operationen af ro/ro skibe varierer rigtigt meget fra rute til rute, så det er svært at bruge en one-size-fits-all tilgang, som man har gjort med EEDI for fragtskibe hvor operationen og tonnagen, i princippet, er mere ensartet. EEDI for ro/ro skibe, i sin nuværende udformning, gør det svært overhovedet at designe et ro/ro skib og i givet fald med så lille en margin, at det udgør en vis risiko, for reder og værft, for at et færdigbygget skib ikke kan opfylde EEDI.

Kan du fremhæve et projekt, som du har været særlig stolt af at deltage i?

– Vi designede to ro/ro-skibe til CMN som, blandt andet, bruges af den franske hær til transport af materiel. Fysiske begrænsninger i forhold til havne og kajanlæg kombineret med meget specifikke ønsker fra slutbrugeren, gjorde dette projekt særligt spændende. Vi udarbejdede en del alternative koncepter i tæt samarbejde med CMN igennem et års tid og det udmøntede sig i en kontrakt på to skibe med Hyundai Mipo. Under et nyligt besøg ombord på ’MN Calao’, udtrykte alle, fra slutbrugeren over rederen til besætningen stor tilfredshed med skibenes design, som iøvrigt afviger minimalt fra det oprindelige koncept. Adspurgt hvad der kunne laves anderledes hvis vi skulle starte forfra, var svaret samstemmende fra alle parter, ingenting. Det var et godt skulderklap.
