Danish naval architect, Knud E Hansen announced last week that construction work had begun on the first of Grimaldi Group’s 12 GG5G Class hybrid ro-ros to be built by Jinling’s Yizheng shipyard.

The ship has an intake of 7,800 lanemetres on five decks. Grimaldi Group has gone the extra mile to reduce the ship’s footprints and fuel consumptions. The vessels will be fitted with exhaust gas scrubbers, 600m² of solar panels, large capacity batteries to supply the hotel load when in port as well as air lubrication technology whereby the ship will ride on a carpet of micro bubbles, hereby reducing the frictional resistance between the hull and the water.

The 64,000gt ships have a length of 238m and 34m beam. Grimaldi has offered the yard a bonus of $10,000 per day the ships are delivered early.

Simultaneously, Knud E Hansen signed a contract with Nanjing Jinling Shipyard, China, for developing the Basic Design of three vessels, based on the design for Grimaldi subsidiary Finnlines. The vessels are based on the same hull as the Grimaldi Green 5th Generation vessels and are thus sister vessels but customised to the needs of Finnlines with regards to heavy cargo and operation in cold climates.

The vessels, which are expected to be delivered from 2021, will have a length of 238 metres, a beam of 34 metres, and are designed to meet the highest Finnish/Swedish ice class, 1A Super. The design is aimed to be flexible for all types of ro-ro cargo with a capacity of 5,800 lane metres and more than 5,000m2 of vehicle decks.

The vessels will use electricity in port, courtesy of large lithium batteries, thus guaranteeing zero emissions whilst at berth. These batteries will be recharged during navigation, through shaft generators employing a peak shaving system. Additionally, an innovative air lubrication system will be installed to reduce hull resistance using a thin layer of bubbles below the keel.
