Today, 16 October 2020, Jinling Shipyard has handed over the 67,311gt ECO VALENCIA to Grimaldi Lines. The 238m long and 34m short-sea ro-ro vessel is the first in a series of 12 highly innovative GG5G Class ro-ro vessels developed by Grimaldi Group in close cooperation with Danish consultant naval architects Knud E. Hansen.

Nine GG5G Class ships will take up service on Grimaldi Lines’ key MoS services in the Mediterranean. The vessels have an intake of 7,800 lanemetres on five decks, the forward half of the 6.8m high main deck, Deck 3, being fitted out with two hoistable car deck levels, each with an area of 890m².

Three vessels in the 12-ship series are adapted for Finnlines service and have four rather than five decks with a 5,800-lanemetre intake and a capacity of 300 TEUs on the weather deck. A total of 5,600m² of car decks give the ships a huge flexibility, the 7.4m high main deck allowing for double-stacked cassettes or project cargo.

The vessel class stands out in many ways. Their huge capacity will reduce the emissions per transported unit but Grimaldi Group has gone the extra mile to reduce the footprints and fuel consumption of the vessel itself. The optimised hull design comes with a Silverstream Technologies air lubrication system to reduce hull friction. Ecospray in-line open-loop, hybrid-ready, SOx scrubbers are fitted, as are solar panels and Leclanché battery packs with a combined capacity of 5MWh, supplying the hotel load when in port, guaranteeing zero emissions and reducing noise.

ECO VALENCIA will connect Livorno and Savona in northern Italy with Barcelona and Valencia in Spain. The next GG5G to be delivered from its Chinese builders is ECO BARCELONA.
