How the vessel can be arranged and specified to meet the Owner’s requirements

Abstract

We often hear about new developments in engines, propulsors and other equipment designed to improve propulsion efficiency of ships. However, often overlooked is the importance of design for efficiency. Hull lines and bow design, while crucial for efficiency, is only one part of the ship design puzzle. How the vessel can be arranged and specified to meet the Owner’s requirements in an optimal way and within the confines of multiple rule sets is a complex undertaking.

Danish naval engineering firm KNUD E. HANSEN is a design consultancy that has a long history of customising ships to the Owner’s requirements in many different market segments, from passenger and RoRo vessels to complex jack-up vessels and special purpose ships. A history of ship design practice and five case studies will be presented to show how the ship design process and a focus on design elements can improve real world efficiency for the Shipowner.
