We have a team of dedicated junior and senior naval architects who are involved in every stage of design and throughout the lifecycle phases of a vessel. Our proficiency includes all of the principle elements of naval architecture including hydrostatics, hydrodynamics and structural engineering. Our experienced team consists of individuals from all sectors of the marine industry who bring a unique set of skills and capabilities to the drawing table.
We maintain a strong focus on customized solutions for RoRo and RoPax vessels, special purpose vessels such as turbine installation ships, naval vessels and offshore structures. We also provide a steady stream of designs and technical support for container vessels, tankers, yachts and most other types of ships.

Newbuildings
The span of our design scope is wide-reaching, covering concept design, tender/contract design, optimized basic design and the integration and coordination of detailed design, based on regulatory and client requirements.
Additionally, prior to the signing of a vessel construction or refit contract, we offer independent advice covering contract negotiations and review of design specifications, covering planning and cost evaluation.

Conversions & Refits
Ship conversions are an efficient and cost-effective means of getting more from an existing vessel, but they must be carried out properly. KNUD E. HANSEN has extensive experience, having completed over 300 conversion projects, as well as feasibility studies for many more. Amongst these are dimension/capacity changes, life extensions, re-purposing, change of regulations, accommodation refurbishment and energy saving projects.
We are active in every stage of the conversion process, from initial feasibility studies to sending engineers to a yard to ensure a smooth process at execution.
As a part of this, we are able to offer support during the yard tendering phase and follow the project throughout with onsite supervision.

Stability Engineering
KNUD E. HANSEN has a wealth of stability expertise and experience across a wide range of ship types whether it concerns newbuilds, conversions, regulatory compliance or practical operations and training. Participation in research projects and at the IMO working groups ensures that we are driving the latest developments and requirements to make ships better and safer. Our services include:
- Intact stability & loading conditions
- Damage stability investigations
- Ship weight control & inclining test
- Damage survival capability service
- Damage control plans
Safety Engineering
KNUD E. HANSEN designs engineering based safety solutions for vessels and offshore structures that deliver safety and efficient escape in the event of an emergency without being restricted by prescriptive requirements. By using advanced software tools to simulate evacuation processes, fire-zones and arrangements can be optimized. Such solutions can often lower the requirements of lagging, installed life saving equipment and crewing for evacuation. This not only saves in building and operating costs but also frees up space improving the vessel arrangement. Our services include:
- Lifesaving equipment
- Structural fire protection
- Escape investigation
- Flow analysis
- Lifesaving solutions
- Muster plans and station bills
